10 Tricks for Packing Lighter on Your Next Trip

Packing light—it sounds easy, doesn’t it? Just bring what you need, and you’re good to go! If only it were that simple… somehow, overpacking just happens. I’ve always been the chronic over-packer, hoping my bag makes the weight limit so I don’t end up at the check-in counter shuffling things around at the last minute. But over time, I’ve learned a few hacks that make packing light way more manageable (though I still sneak in a few extras!). Here are my go-to tricks for fitting everything you need—and maybe a little extra—without the bulk!

1. Start with a Packing List and Stick to It

A packing list can be a lifesaver, helping you keep track of your items and plan outfits by day so you’re well-suited for any activity. Plus, it ensures you have everything you need without tossing in extras.

2. Roll, Don’t Fold Clothes

Rolling clothes is a game-changer! It saves way more space than you’d think, and you’ll be surprised at how much more you can fit. Bonus: rolled clothes don’t wrinkle as much as folded ones.

3. Use Packing Cubes for Organization Overload

Packing cubes keep everything organized, making it easy to pull out exactly what you need. Keep your tops, bottoms, underwear, and toiletries in separate cubes, so you can grab what you need without tearing through your entire bag.

4. Wear the Bulky Stuff on the Plane

Shoes, jackets, and other bulky items can take up serious suitcase space. When you’re traveling, wear your heaviest jacket and shoes to save room in your bag.

5. Mini Bottles & Reusable Containers Are Game-Changers

As tempting as it is to toss in your full-size toiletries, invest in mini bottles you can refill for each trip. They save so much space in your bag!

6. Pick Multi-Purpose Clothing Items

Choose pieces that can pull double (or triple) duty, like a dress that works as both a beach cover-up and an evening outfit. Stick to neutral colors that go with everything for added versatility.

7. Pack Your Shoes Smartly

Shoes are among the bulkiest items, so pack them wisely! Think about how many pairs you really need—and don’t overdo it.

8. Streamline Your Accessories

It’s easy to go overboard with accessories, but simplicity is key when packing light. Bring a neutral bag or two that go with multiple outfits and a few versatile jewelry pieces that work for various occasions.

9. Go Digital with Your Travel Essentials

Save space (and paper) by storing all your travel docs, boarding passes, and confirmations on your phone. Going digital means less clutter, and it’s easier to keep everything organized.

10. Leave Room for Souvenirs

This one I tend to forget—but it’s important if you love souvenirs! Always leave a little extra space in your bag for anything you pick up on your travels; that way, you won’t have to squeeze them into someone else’s luggage.

By following these tricks, packing becomes a whole lot simpler and lighter! You can fit everything you need while leaving room for a few extras.
